Nitro Fuel Safety Tips
Owning a nitro powered remote control vehicle comes with thrills and excitement for every owner. However, for all users there are certainly some things to keep in mind in operating and running a nitro-powered vehicle. The most important thing to keep in mind is handling the fuel. Below is some important safety tips. Of course, always follow the manufacturer guidelines for handling and storage of any fuel product and/or fuel systems.
Tips to Operating Your Nitro RC Safely
Nitro Fuel Introduction:
There are basically three main components to Nitro fuel: methanol, nitromethane, and oil and typically some additives like an anti-corrosion agent and even some simple degumming-type agents that are all added in by the manufacturer. Nitromethane is what helps delivers oxygen into the engine, which of course helps combustion and essentially delivering more power. Along the same time, the oil-based lubricates help to keep the engine cool by distributing/transfering heat. All the while, methanol is the primary component of the mixture, and the percentage of nitromethanein in the mix essentially determine the ratio of the nitro fuel.
Fueling: WARNING
Please understand that Nitromethane (nitro fuel) is EXTREMELY flammable. We can't say this enough - this is a strong warning. Always avoid any smoking and keep away from open flames. When you are fueling your nitro RC, be sure to clean up any and all spills and properly discard any fuel-soaked rags for personal safety and of course environmental safety. Always read labels and documention with fuel manufacturers containers for proper disposal.
Fuel Handling:
Whether you are at the track or around a race park it is not uncommon for you to see others carry fuel in a handy fill-type bottle. Mistakes can happen, so to help make sure that you do not get some of your own fuel mixed up by mistake with another person's fuel bottle be sure to label or identify your fuel bottle. Along the same lines you will need to do this if you happen to be running different mixtures with multiple vehicles that require different fuel mixes. One quick tip is to color-code your bottles to avoid any mix-up in your mix-ups (insert pun here).
Storage Considerations:
Simialar to storing regular automotive fuel cans at home, be sure to safely store your nitro fuel away from any open flame (especially around a hot water heater that uses a pilot light), and allow for plenty of ventalation. double-check to secure the container cap tightly to avoid any evaporation. A dry location would be better as as the fuel easily attracts moisture from the air. When water gets in the fuel will make it will compromise the misture by making it weak and, of course, any water entering the engine chamber could cause serious mechanical harm to your engine.
It goes without saying the every nitro vehicle can vary greatly and have a variety of different requirements. ALWAYS follow the manufacture recommendations when you are fueling, starting your engine, and operating your vehicle in any space. ALWAYS be sure to take the necessary steps involved in safely protecting yourself and protecting others when you are operating your vehicle. Review the owners manual as it will have other suggestions on operation that you should become familiarized with. We trust reviewing these tips will may be a help to you as you enjoy your nitro rc vehicle experience.
